George VI - One Cent

In 1942 September 8th, the thicker high relief One Cent coin was changed to a bronze of half the thickness and weight in low relief to conserve metal for war. Copper 97%; Zinc 2.5%; tin 0.5%.

Obverse : Crowned effigy of George VI to left in low relief in the center of the legend GEORGE VI KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA, along periphery. Initials of designer P M in relief below the truncation.

Reverse : A Talipot palm in the center, Left Sinhala satheyer; Right Tamil Satam. CEYLON . ONE . CENTS and year below along periphery.
