According to Kelly "Notes issued between 1902 March 17, and 1924 March 14, were overprinted with the appropriate geographical letter." Since the Ceylon MN was Chartered on an earlier date 1901 October 4th, if the subsequent initial order of banknotes was completed before 1902 March 17, there would be 1882 Brown Back notes without the M and if there was order after that date and before 1908, there would notes with the M. So the Ceylon MN 1882 Brown Back notes may or may not have the M, and there maybe notes of both kinds.

The Treasury Serial number at change over on 1902 March 17 was between Z836436E and Z9228485E by inspecting a few 1882 Brown Backs which are in the Heritage Auction Archive.
