1998 - Sri Lanka - 200 rupee note slab
50th Independence Anniversary

To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Sri Lanka regaining Independence and a polymer two hundred rupee note was issued on 1998, February, 4th. A limited number of early serial numbers were encased in a slab of acrylic and sold to public as a paper-weight. They had orange Serial Numbers.

The note was framed with a blue paper as seen on above scan of edge.
The surface of both sides of acrylic slab was protected by a Brown paper which could be peeled away.

It was sold to public with an issue price of Rs 650/- (US $10).
As a novelty item it was not very popular among collectors and was available many years after issue at CBSL. I even remember refusing to buy one from CBSL sales counter in Bristol Street, Fort. It is now a very difficult item to locate. This slab was won from Mr Fred Medis at Auction at SLNS meeting in 2013 May.
